“… he filled all the twelve amphoras with sweet not mixed wine, a divine drink… And when they wanted to drink from that red wine, sweet as honey, he filled a glass with it, mixed it with water twelve times and pleasant scent permeated from the crater. No one could refrain from it.” Homer, the Odyssey

The acquaintance
with the Bulgarian wines on Bulgarian land is like touching the mystery
of the Thracian culture: an ancient civilization with a heritage
that envelops our lands with a unique atmosphere. Homer relates about
the Thracians in the Iliad and the Odyssey: together with
the poet’s admiration for their fighting courage and fleet horses
he mentions also the Thracian wine: it had the reputation of
a first class drink. Homer convinces the reader of the miraculous
Thracian wine with the words of the legendary tsar Maron, cited
above. Maron gave Odysseus 12 amphoras with that “sweet wine” as
a gift and it was just what helped him win the victory over Poliphem
– after drinking of the not mixed Maron’s wine the Cyclop got asleep
and then Odysseus blinded him.
